"Strength of material"
Mechanics
It is a branch of science which deals with the study of effect of forces on material
Mechanics of materials
It deals with the study of resisting capacity of materials due to the application of external load or forces
Types of materials
- Non deformable (rigid objects)
- Deformable
Non Deformable
These are the materials which do not under go any change in its size or shape due to the application of external loads
Deformable
These are the materials which undergo change in its size or shape on application of external loads
In mom all materials are treated as deformable materials
- Elastic materials
- Plastic materials
- Elasto plastic materials
Elastic Materials
The materials which can undergo change in its size or shape when ever subjected to external forces and has the tendency to regain its original shape and size soon after the external forces are removed such materials are known as elastic material and property is called elasticity
Plastic Materials
The materials which can undergo change in its size or shape when ever subjected to external forces and has no tendency to regain its original shape and size soon after the external forces are removed such materials are known as plastic material and property is called plasticity
Elasto Plastic Materials
The materials which can regain partially its original size or shape soon after the removal of external forces acting on them
In mom all the materials are assumed to be elastic materials
Homogeneous Materials
Materials which consists of same matter distributed uniformly through out and having same physical mechanical property through out are called homogeneous materials
Isotropic Materials (red hot material)
These are the materials which has same elastic properties in all the direction at a given point
Anisotropic Materials
These are the materials having different elastic properties in all the direction at a given point
Homogeneous And Isotropic Materials
These are the materials which has same elastic properties in all the direction at all the points
In mom all the materials are assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic
Ductile Materials
The materials which can sustain large deformation with out failure under tensile loads are known as ductile materials and its property is said to be ductility
Eg: copper, aluminum, steel, mild steel
Brittle Materials
These are the materials which can sustain small deformation under tensile loads
Eg: glass, cast iron, brass, ceramics
Stress [Sigma “σ” Unit: N/ mm2]
It is the resistance offered by material / unit area of cross section against any loads, This stress is known as average or mean stress or simple stress
Normal Stress or Direct Stress
Stress induced in the materials, due to the application of forces normal to the area of cross section are known as normal or direct stress
Axial Stress
Stress induced in the material due to the application of axial forces
Stress
- Tensile stress
- Compression stress
Tensile Stress
It is the resistance offered by material / unit area of cross section against tensile forces is known as tensile stress
Compressive Stress
It is the resistance offered by materials / unit area of cross section against compressive forces is called compressive stress
Bending Stress
It is the resistance offered by materials / unit area of cross section against bending due to transverse loads
Shear Stress / Tangential Stress [Tow “τ” Unit: N/ mm2]
It is the resistance offered by materials / unit area of cross section against shearing or application of tangential forces
Strain [Epsilon “Ε or ϵ ” Unit: no unit ]
It is the measurement of deformation in the material by comparing the change with its originality.
Types of strains
- Linear Strain / Primary
- Lateral strain / Secondary
- Volumetric strain
Linear Strain / Primary
It is the strain measured in a material in the direction of application of the force
Linear strain = change in length / original length {dl / l}
Lateral strain / Secondary
It is the strain measured in a material in the direction perpendicular [to the line of action of the force
Lateral strain = db / b or dt / t
Volumetric Strain
It is the strain measured with respect to change in volume in the material due to combined effect of lenear and lateral strains
Volumetric strain = change in volume / original volume {dv / v}
[change in volume, dv = final volume – original volume
final volume = (l+dl) (b-db) (t-dt) ]
Relation b/w stress and strain
Hooks Law
For elastic materials stress is directly proportional to the strain with in elastic limit

The constant of proportionality
is called the Modulus of Elasticity
or Young's Modulus and is equal to the slope of the stress-strain diagram

Young’s modulus or elastic modulus
+ve slope of stress - strain with in elastic limit
E = stress / strain {with in elastic limit}
Stress Strain Behavior Of Ductile Material In Tension
The strains are measured along with corresponding stress using extensometer or strain guage
From graph it can be observed that the portion “OA” is a straight line and linear indicating that the material obeys hook’s law. The point A in the graph corresponds to proportional limit, little beyond A still behaves as elastic material but hook’s law need not to valid. the point A’ is the elastic limit. Very close to A’ the material begins to yield @ B with out any appreciable increase in stress but corresponding increase in strain. Yielding continues up to point C is called lower yield point. After yielding there will be appropriate raise in strain corresponding increase in stress and the curve seen rising up to point D the point D corresponds to ultimate point after this the specimen develops failure by forming a neck @ this stage even if the loads are decrease the strain is continuously increase, decrease in stress till it breaks. The point E is the break point.
Proportional limit = stress @ A {load @ A / original area of cross section}
Elastic limit = stress @ A’
Yield stress = stress @ C
Ultimate / maximum stress = stress @ D
Safe Stress / Design Stress / Working Stress
The structure or mechanical component is always design the stress less than maximum or ultimate stress
For ductile material with yield point
Factor of safety (FOS) = yield point / (safe/working/design stress)
For brittle material with out yield point
Factor of safety (FOS) = ultimate stress / (safe/working/design stress)
Assumptions on Material in MOM
Material must be elastic
Material must be homogeneous and isotropic
It must be of uniform cross section through out (prismatic)
It must be subjected to axial force
Hooks law must be valid
Stress In Composite Section Connected In Parallel
A composite section is one which is made up of more than one different type of materials connected in parallel in these sections the stress in each material will be different but the amount of deformation that each material undergo are equal, these type of sections are preferred for safety strength and economical reasons
Eg: RCC structure (Reinforced cement concrete)
Modular Ratio
It is the ratio of greater value of young’s modulus of one material to the smaller value of young’s modulus for the other material this ratio is used to relate the stress and area of cross section in different materials which helps in designing the economical sections
Elastic Constants
- Young’s modulus
- Poisson’s ratio
- Bulk modulus
- Shear modulus / rigidity modulus
Poisson’s Ratio [ Nue “ν” or mue ‘μ’]
When ever a material are strained to one direction it will be always accompanied by corresponding strains in the mutual perpendicular direction also this strain is known as lateral or secondary strain
Simon.d.poisson showed that there exists a constant ratio between the lateral and leaner strain with in the elastic limit this ratio is known as poison’s ratio which is defined as the ratio of lateral strain to leaner strain
μ = ( db / b or dt / t ) / (dl / l)
For most material μ value will be 0.25 to 0.45 and
If it is > 0.5 it will be for rubber and “0” zero for cork material
Bulk Modulus [“K” Unit: N/ mm2]
It is the measure of resistance against change in volume, it is defined as the ratio of identical or hydrostatic stress to the volumetric strain in the material. Bulk modulus is denoted by letter “K”
Shear Modulus / Rigidity Modulus [“G” Unit: N/ mm2]
It is the measure of resistance against rigidity or stiffness as per hooks law
τ = shear stress
Φ = shear strain
G = τ / Φ
Compound Stress
The normal stress and tangential stress on any given oblique plane are called compound stress. The normal stress are develop in an element due to bending moment and tangential force are develop due to shear force
Principle Planes and Principle Stress
There are the planes which carry only normal stress with out any shear stress, hence the principle planes are also known as shear less planes.
Generally there are 2 principle planes which mutually perpendicular to each other and known as major and minor principle planes
The normal stress on the principle planes are called principle stress
the plane which carries maximum normal stress is called major principle plane and the plane which carries minimum normal stress is called minor principle plane, correspondingly the normal stresses are called major principle stress and minor principle stress

DO U KNOW ABOUT "WHAT IS AN AUDIT"?
Once upon a time there was a shepherd looking after his sheep
on the side of a deserted road.
Suddenly a brand new Porsche screeches to a halt. The driver, a
man dressed in an Armani suit, Cerutti shoes, Ray-Ban
sunglasses, TAG-Heuer wrist-watch, and a Pierre Cardin tie gets
out and asks the shepherd,
'If I can tell you how many sheep you have, will you give me one of them?'
The shepherd looks at the young man, then looks at the large
flock of grazing sheep and replies, 'Okay.'
The young man parks the car, connects his laptop to the
mobile-fax, enters a NASA Website, scans the ground using his
GPS, opens a database and 60 Excel tables filled with
algorithms and pivot tables.
He then prints out a 150-page report on his high-tech
mini-printer, tu rns to the shepherd and says,
'You have exactly 1,586 sheep.'
The shepherd cheers, 'That's correct, you can have your sheep.'
The young man takes one of the animals from the flock and puts
it in the back of his Porsche.
The shepherd looks at him and asks, 'If I guess your
profession, will you return my animal to me ?'
The young man answers, 'Yes, why not?'
The shepherd says, 'You are an auditor.'
'How did you know?' asks the young man
'Very simple,' answers the shepherd. '
Firstly, you came here without being wanted.
Secondly, you charged me a fee to tell me something I already
knew.
Thirdly, you don't understand anything about my business.... '

"Analysis of human brain"
Women - Multiple process
Women's brains designed to concentrate multiple task at a time.
Women can Watch a TV and Talk over phone and cook the new recipe.
Men - Single Process
Men's brain is designed to concentrate only one work at a time. Men can not watch a TV and talk
on phone same time.. He stops the TV while Talking. He can either watch TV or talk over phone
or cook.
LANGUAGE.
Women can easily learn many languages. Her brain set up. But can not find the solutions to
problems Men can not easily learn languages; he can easily solve the problems.
3 year old gal has three times higher vocabulary than 3 year old boy.
ANALYTICAL SKILL
Men's brain has lot of space for handling the analytical process. So easily he can analyze and
find the solution for a process.
He can design (blue print) a map of a building easily.
If a complex map is viewed by women, she can not understand it. She can not understand the
details of the map easily.
For her it is dump of lines in a paper.
CAR DRIVING.
While driving a car, men's analytical spaces are used in his brain. He can drive a car fast. If he
see an object at long distance, immediately his brain classifies the object (bus or van or car)
direction and speed of the object and driving accordingly. Where as women take a long time to
recognize the object direction/ speed. His single process mind stops the audio in the car (if any),
then concentrating only on the driving.
You can often watch, while men driving the car fast, the women sit next to him will shout, "GO
SLOW" , "CARE FULL", "AAHHH", "OHH GOD.." .etc..
LIE
Many times, when men lie to women face to face, they got caught easily.
Her super natural brain observe the facial expression 70%, and the body language 20% and the
words comes from mouth 10%. So he is easily caught while lieing.
Men's brain does not have this.
Women easily lie to men face to face.
So guys, While lieing to your girls, use phone, or letter or close all the lights or cover your/her face with blanket.
Don't lie face to face.
PROBLEM.
End of day, if men have lot of problems, his brain clearly classifies the problems and put into
individual rooms of brain, the problems in individual room of brain and finding the solution one
by one. You can see many guys looking on the sky's for a long times. If you disturb him, he gets
irritated.
End of Day, if women have lot of problems, her brain can not classify the problems. she wants
some one to hear that. After telling everything to a person she goes happily to bed. She does not
worry abt the problem solved or not.
WANTS
Men want status, success, solutions, big process... etc Women want relationship, friends,
family...etc...
UNHAPPY
If women unhappy with their relations, she can not concentrate on work.
If men unhappy with their work, he can not concentrate on the relations.
MAP
Men can easily locate the place in a complex map. His analytical brain does this. While watching
a cricket match in a stadium with full of crowd, men can leave his seat to T shop and keeps
everything in his mind and comes back to his seat with out problems. He uses his analytical skills
space of brain.
Women can't do this. They often lost their way to their seat.
LIFE
Life is very easy to Men. One good job, one alcohol bottle is enough for him.
Women want everything in life.
SPEECH
Women use indirect languages in speech.
Geetha asked Vijay, "vijay do you like to have a cup of coffee?"
This means, Geetha really want a cup of coffee.
In the morning........"Darling, do you think, will it be good to have an Omlette for breakfast"
Men use direct language. "Geetha, I want to have a cup of coffee, Pls stop the car when you see a
coffee shop".
In the morning...."Darling, Can you please prepare an omelet for breakfast".
HANDLING EMOTION
Women talk a lot without thinking, if they are in emotion.
Men act a lot with out thinking. That's why many of prisoners are men all over the world.

"HEART THROB OF EVERY INDIAN YOUTH"
Here I am, in an old bikes store with worn limbs. My eyes are swollen
with the bangs my previous rider gave me, and my body is smattered
with the various dents that my riders have given me over the passage
of time. Half of me is dead and rusted, I am not attractive and shiny
as I used to be ? but I have one thing that no other machine has ? the
undying spirit and the cruel intention to set the roads on fiery
mirth.
I was both handsome and beautiful once. The true heartthrob of every
Indian youth ? I enjoyed celebrity and cult status like no other
machine in the Indian automotive market. My very roar eclipses the
thought of buying another make ? if power, speed and reliability are
what you are looking for.
Riders who know how to ride me have enjoyed lasting companionships. I
am a machine that embeds with man like no other. Stretch me to my
limits and break them every time you ride me. That is what I was made
for, that is what I love doing.
Riding me is all about a precise balance between speed and control.
Desire more for any one of these and you will find yourself on your
back. I can be your companion if you know how to ride me, but will not
be enslaved to one who does not. I possess the courage to break free
from your grip if you do not deserve to hold me between your legs.
My engines have been opened up time and time again. I come from a very
adaptive family ? and mechanics who know what they are doing can
increase my power that no other bike in this country can deliver. Port
my engine, file my pistons and insert a fifth cog and you can ride me
on a highway at 160 kmph after and all you will hear is my monstrous
roar. Mechanics who know how to do it are rare, but then?, they are my
true lovers.
I will crown you the sole king of the road ? for no one else will dare
to compete. A condenser tube (you will find those in the rear of all
hatch backs, used to keep the hatches open) snugly fitted between the
fork and tank on both sides solves my vibration problems at high
speeds. Some of my comrades have disc brake assemblies in the front
wheel for better braking ? but don?t forget, I was the one who taught
the Indian rider how to decelerate by stepping up the gears.
Throw me into any corner, and I will come out like a swooping eagle.
Ride me into traffic, and I will lead out of it like a slithering
snake. Accelerate me on the highway ? I promise you the power of bulls
and speed of horses.
Give me all the good drink I need, I am an addicted drunkard ? and I
will deliver the fastest spinning rear wheel you have ever seen. Save
all your care for the girl you hooked on to from your college, showing
off riding me ? I need hardly little of it. A little care for my beast
of an engine and my body is all that is required.
Here I am, in an old bikes store. I am on the way to the metal scrap
unit ? yet I possess the legendary fame that no Indian bike has
enjoyed ever. My roar will always continue to be the heartbeat of the
true biker ? and my performance will always compared to by 4 stroke
bike manufacturers, out of sheer shame. I have no death, for I will
always live in the hearts and mind of the true Indian biker ? I am the
with the bangs my previous rider gave me, and my body is smattered
with the various dents that my riders have given me over the passage
I possess the courage to break free
from your grip if you do not deserve to hold me between your legs.

suggest me the title wat i need to keep...!!!
Each Friday night after work, Sardar would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a tandoori chicken and some meat kebabs. But, all of his neighbors
were strict Catholics ... and since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating chicken and meat on a Friday.
The delicious aroma from the grilled meats was causing such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they finally talked to their Priest.
The Priest came to visit Sardar and suggested that he become a Catholic.
After several classes and much study, Sardar attended Mass... and as the priest sprinkled holy water over him, he said, "You were born a Sikh, and
raised a Sikh, but now, you are a Catholic."
Sardar's neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived.
The wonderful aroma of tandoori chicken and meat kebabs filled the neighborhood. The Priest was called immediately by the neighbors and, as he
rushed into Sardar's backyard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped and watched in amazement.
There stood Sardar, holding a small bottle of holy water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meats and chanted: "Oye, you were born a
chicken, and you were born a lamb, you were raised a chicken and you were raised a lamb, but now you are a potato and tomato"..!!!!
The Priest fainted............

Standard Electrical Specification Terms
What Is A Joule? Or a Watt, Volt, or an Amp?
Electronics and Electricity, uses a wide range of terms to represent different kinds of measurement units. Many you have seen every day, and others from time to time in product specifications. These are all part of the International System of Units. Here is a short list of several common terms your will see products and their meanings:
JOULE: One joule (symbol: J) is defined as the amount of work done by electricity. Technically it is the work required to continuously produce one watt of power for one second; or one watt second (W*s). One kilowatt hour (a common electric company measure) equals 3,600,000 Joules (1W*s x 1,000 x 3600 seconds).

Using This Chart You Can Easily Calculate
The Wattage, Current (Amps), Ohms, and Voltage For A Device!
The Wattage, Current (Amps), Ohms, and Voltage For A Device!
WATT: In terms of mechanical energy, one watt (symbol: W or P) is a measure of energy used - this frequently results in heat, or as in the case of a light bulb, the heat creates a glow, thus more heat equals more light. Technically a Watt is the rate at which work is done when an object is moved at a speed of one meter per second against a force of one newton. By the definitions of electric potential (volt) and current (ampere), work is done at a rate of one watt when one ampere flows through a potential difference of one volt - or simply A*V=W
AMP (Ampere): In practical terms, the ampere (symbol: I) is the amount of electrical current passing through a conductor (a wire). Technically it is a measure of the amount of electric charge passing a point per unit time. Around 6.242 × 1018 electrons passing a given point each second constitutes one ampere. You can figure out the Amps being use by dividing the Wattage by Voltage. A 100W light, in a typical house (120V) uses 1.2A.
VOLT (Voltage): The volt (symbol: V) is the unit of electromotive force measurement, commonly called "voltage". Technically, the volt is defined as the value of the voltage across a conductor when a current of one ampere dissipates one watt of power in the conductor. For example, if you know a TV uses 295 Watts and uses 2.45 Amps, you can calculate the voltage is 120 Volts.
OHM: The ohm (symbol: Ω or R) is the unit of electrical impedance in AC, or, in the direct current case, electrical resistance. It is the resistance of material to electrical current. The higher the value, the higher the resistance, and the more voltage is required, and the more current used. Most home speakers are low resistance, just 8 ohm. Technically, the ohm is defined as the resistance between two points of a conductor when a constant of 1 volt is applied, and produces in a current of 1 ampere.
DECIBEL: The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit of measurement that expresses the magnitude of a physical quantity (usually power or intensity) relative to a specified or implied reference level. The decibel is useful for a wide variety of measurements (particularly acoustics and electronics). It has a number of advantages, such as the ability to conveniently represent very large or small numbers, in a scaling that roughly corresponds to the human perception of sound and light. It is frequently seen in Home Theater Receivers to represent amplification or volume. Since it is based on a reference level, it is not easily used by the non-engineer, but simply as a specification value.
